Fred Phelps finally had the good taste to die. A gay activist has written in The Washington Post a call for people not to celebrate his death. He quotes Matthew Shepard's mother as saying of Phelps: “Oh, we love Freddy. If it wasn’t for him there would be no Matthew
Shepard.” Meaning they made him a "national symbol of the fight against hate."
It should be noted though that Phelps also made Jerry Falwell and his ilk seem respectable.
Good riddance to him. No reason to be polite about it. I'm glad he's dead.
Years ago, social psychologists joined a UFO cult that was predicting the end of the world. The students studied them and wrote what happened in the book When Prophesy Fails. I wish a few would infiltrate the Westboro Baptist Church. I'd like to know what these horrible people will do now.
