Mama Mia, high school edition

One of the girls said "shit", and it seemed to be in the script. The son of a family friend was performing, playing one of the possible fathers in his high school's production of Mama Mia featuring the music of Abba.

When I was in school, we had a German kid play the paper boy in Streetcar Named Desire. This play had a kid either doing an accent or an actual foreign exchange student.

Before I went, it seemed insane to me that school plays were all musicals. Singing in front of an audience seems like a nightmare for all involved, but it was pretty good. I enjoyed it. They all wore little microphones. There were sign language interpreters onstage dressed in black and I guess they were needed because there were people in the audience communicating this way. I was a little surprised at the girls wearing really short pants and a couple of the boys were shirtless. And there was a girl who made no attempt to disguise the fact that she was a girl as she played a male character. They sang and acted at the same time which not everyone can do.

When high school kids imagine themselves as actors, is this what they envision? Singing on stage?

As an alternative, I would suggest the school do a weekly 23 minute play, something they could perform during lunch. It would simulate a weekly half-hour TV series.
