I remember seeing this guy, Frank Abagnale, on The Tomorrow Show in the '70's. I thought
he was a monster. What kind of person would impersonate a pediatrician
or get on a plane full of people pretending to be the pilot? It's okay in the movie because he's doing it to get his divorced parents back together.
In the opening scene he sabotages his own appearance on To Tell the Truth by proudly naming the man who arrested him. Which was the point of the movie. A teenage conman (28-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio) sees the man trying to put him in prison (Tom Hanks) as a father figure.
I prefer a more traditional Oedipal conflict.
